Peals Rung at St Mary Abbots, Kensington

This record contains details of every peal known to have been rung at St Mary Abbots, Kensington. It is based on the brief records collected by Canon Felstead, with full details collated from a range of sources.

Sources of Detailed Information:

  1. Society of Royal Cumberland Youths Peal Books.
  2. Ancient Society of College Youths Peal Books.
  3. Society of London Youths Peal Book (floreat 1753–1780). Manuscript peal book in the British Library .
  4. Union Society, Newport, Isle of Wight Peal Book. The manuscript book is also in the British Library, and contains occasional references to peals rung elsewhere in the UK, though full bands are not always given.
  5. St James’ Society Peal Book (later the London County Association).
  6. “Bell’s Life in London” – only record of Peal No 61.
  7. St Mary Abbots Guild Peal Book – most peals from 1899 onwards.
  8. Church Bells (1870–1905).
  9. Bell News (1881–1915).
  10. Campanology (1896–1897).
  11. The Ringing World (1911–date) and BellBoard.
  12. Peal Boards in the tower – Most peal boards duplicate peals recorded elsewhere, but Peal No 59 is only recorded on a peal board, and does not appear on Canon Felstead’s list.
  13. Charles Barber’s Ringing Book: Charles Barber (1770–1823) was a prominent Kensington–based ringer whose manuscript ringing book is a rare survival from this period. It contains full records of all peals rung by him between 1789 and 1801 (including many at Kensington) as well as notes of peals up until 1816 which he did not get round to writing up in full. Many of his peals were rung for the College Youths, and so are recorded in their peal books as well, but his notebook lists five peals rung by him at St Mary Abbots that were not for a named society and thus not recorded elsewhere. Two of these are recorded on peal boards in the tower, but that still leaves three that would be unknown were it not for Barber’s book. The book was purchased from a bookseller by Laith Reynolds, who kindly presented it to the St Mary Abbots Guild.

Note: The list may still grow as new peals are discovered in other old records. For example, Peal No. 4 was not on the Felstead database when I conducted the initial research for this record in 2003. It is noted as having been discovered by John Eisel in the “St. James’s Chronicle or the British Evening Post” of 27th September 1774. I have not yet been able to consult this source.

This ring, an augmented one from eight to ten, by Messrs. J. Warner & Sons, was opened by this society on New-Year’s Eve, 1879, but this is the first peal on the bells, by which the Cumberlands achieve the honour of ringing the first peal on the present and the last on the old ring, which took place on July 24th, 1869, after demolition of the old tower had commenced. Messrs. Hoverd, Stackwood, and Mansfield took part in each peal.
