After Peter completed his 1,000th peal (in April 1965), he started a “little black book” in which he recorded the compositions of every peal that he rang since that time. That gives an insight into his interest in composition; it has also been the basis for me putting together this personal collection, in response to a request from the Peal Compositions Committee. In all, I have compiled 122 of Peter’s compositions from this and other sources, up to the late 1980’s, when Peter ceased to enter them into his book (and we have yet to discover where they might be!). Those who come across additional unpublished compositions may wish to contribute them to this collection.
First, an overview: Peter’s compositions tend to mirror what has been said of him as a person. They are practical — they fitted a purpose at the time; mostly they are simple, unassuming — Peter often ascribed “arranged” rather than “composed”; they are “ethical” in that Peter shunned non-standard calls such as big bobs or exotic singles in peculiar places; and they have stood the test of time. Moreover, all were developed without the aid of computers. There are no odd-bell compositions, although Peter did call a few peals of Grandsire and Stedman Caters and Cinques. Had he ever turned his hand to Stedman Triples, I am sure his problem-solving abilities could have cracked the bobs-only composition.
As we look at his compositions today, many may appear as run-of-the-mill, unexceptional, almost all capable of being derived by Byroc or similar. That misses the point: we are where we are today in ringing because composers such as Peter had the vision at the time to steer a course in the right direction. I, personally, owe much to Peter who was a mentor for me when I came to Birmingham at the beginning of the 1960’s and we often collaborated on many subsequent developments in method and composition.
The compositions have been arranged in sections, based on number of bells and method group, then (loosely) by alphabetical order of method, length and date. Each composition has been indexed by Peter’s peal number when it was first rung (except for some notable ones which have the specific date). An Index Table gives the date for each 100th peal from 1,000 to 2,300.
Maximus
There are 82 compositions in this section. Peter’s first known ones date from 1960, when he composed (“arranged” in his terms) a series of 5,042s for B Group methods (Cambridge, Pudsey and Yorkshire). Peter instigated these “short” peals because the Thursday night band at Birmingham Cathedral were weary of ringing well beyond 9 o’clock after a hard day’s work. Most of these early short peals were modelled on the popular 5,280s containing three 56- and 65-courses and only contain the one single at the end. Later ones contained multiple singles, as their use gained acceptance. In all, there are 13 compositions of Cambridge Surprise Maximus in the collection.
Another favourite method in Birmingham in the 1960’s was Superlative and Peter pioneered the way with eight compositions, one distinctive feature being the positioning of the bob at Out — initially in the last course, it migrated to the first course in a later composition. In the mid-1980’s Peter even uses half-lead calls — acceptable, because Superlative is a double method!
The London group was also very popular in the 1960’s and 70’s; Peter enjoyed Londinium (a method with character!) but produced Newgate, Barford and Eldon, as well as 20 compositions for these methods. Most compositions in this group are interchangeable between methods but have been labelled with the method for which they were first rung.
The 1970’s began with a spate of peals of Bristol Surprise Maximus and Peter responded with several 10ths place and 4ths place compositions; his 5,042 is particularly well known. These were followed by Strathclyde; initially 5,280s were the norm (10ths place calls), but Peter came up with the solution for a 5,040, somewhat carried to excess!
Later in the 1970’s Peter composed what I regard as the jewel in the crown, the method Avon — beautifully constructed, musical, and challenging to ring. Five years on from there I gave him the back work of Orion and he complemented it with the front work that is rung today. The 5,040 was used for the first peal in each of these methods.
Royal
There are 24 compositions, 11 each for the B and F Groups. The best must be his first composition of Cambridge, with its four triplets of bobs on 2,3,4, first rung 25.9.1965. There are also compositions of Albanian, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. The 11 peals of London No 3 Surprise Royal (or variants), concentrate mainly on 56’s and 65’s, which were the order of the day, but two employ split-tenors with some 9680’s. Some are minor variations of others and Peter acknowledged the basic pioneering work by Ken Lewis in this field.
Major
The first compositions do not appear in his book until 1974, although Peter composed a long length of Glasgow in 1967, but did not take part. Then followed a spate of activity on Glasgow and (mainly) Bristol Surprise. There are several excellent 2-parts of Bristol , all based on a 32546 part-end, later ones using half-lead calls. Others in this category include Belfast, Belgrave, Plain Bob and Double Norwich CB.
Peter also composed record lengths of Glasgow (11,872) and London (14,336). The Glasgow, in 1967, caused controversy because Peter’s composition was extended by one course with the aid of a special single — an artefact that he had consciously rejected. This was constructed on a 3-part plan in whole courses, whilst the London was a 5-part. It must have taken hours of work, first to identify which plan worked best, then to identify the courses and finally to piece together the composition — but it was the sort of challenge he relished. I also have annotated his set of 973 mutually true leads of Bristol on a 7-part plan. We never could improve on this and it will be interesting to see whether fresh minds and modern technology can rise to the challenge.
These, then, are just a sample of what Peter composed. He was not prolific, being more than happy to call others’ compositions but, when the occasion demanded, he had all the skills and imagination to produce the goods. It is fitting that his work should be preserved for posterity.
