Many people when first starting out in handbells (with an all novice band) believe the easiest Bob Minor composition would be whw x 6. Personally I think w sw w sw h x 3 is much better. I won't bother explaining the advantages of this, because I'm sure you are already aware of them. I didn't examine the composition closely, (and still haven't) but given the constraints of BDK falseness, and the fact of a 12-course skeleton identical in both comps, it's an even bet they both contain pretty much the same courses (24 out of a maximum of 30 true ones). At a glance the setup looks a bit like that in Law James' London: M B W H __________ 2 2 3 __________ a x b 3 |A __________ 3a __________ where you can call *either* 3M at "a" *or* 3W at "b" in *each* A-block. Do you consider the two variants of Barton's Lincolnshire (one with 3H and one with M & W only) to be distinct? Anyway, can't you get the same property for Washbrook's original by starting it between the M & W like yours? I'll have another look when I've finished learning my spliced. The general criteria for selection are:- - Reduced positions for pairs (handbell friendly) - but often just for one working pair as we commonly have an experienced ringer to ring the other working pair - Simplicity of calling - few calls & multiparts (favouring 56 and/or 34 home at the part ends) - Pairs together music - 56 & 65 roll ups, (2)3456, (7)6543 runs and 65432 runs (favoured over 2345s and 5432s). - Straightforward multi-part atw spliced - Musical compositions for methods rung more commonly on handbells than towerbells (Kent, Oxford, Norwich) Graham From: "Edward W Martin" To: Subject: suitable for hb Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 10:04:44 -0500 5184 DNCB Major In 12 parts 23456 1 5 6 34526 s - 53642 x 65234 x 26453 x 42365 x 2 singles half a peal apart must be called at either 1 in the second course or at 4 in the last course Each part has 27 leads of which 21 have the 5-6 coursing and unaffected by calls Edward W Martin Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 11:03:38 -0500 (EST) From: Don Morrison To: Roger Bailey Subject: Hanbell composition correction Last week I sent you the following, amidst a bunch of other handbell stuff, and attributed it to myself: 5,184 Kent Treble Bob Maximus 23456 M W H ______________ 43526 2 1 25634 1 1 53462 1 2 24365 1 1 ______________ Repeat. To: "Matthew Hilling" From: Roger Bailey Subject: Re: Plain Bob Major Peal on handbells Funny you should say that, as I just put out a call for handbell comps to put in the proposed CC Collection of the same (compiled by me). The classical comp that we always used to ring was this: 5,376 (5,152) By E Maurice Atkins 23456 W M H ______________ 42635 - - 56234 - - 35262 - 42356 - - - ______________ The basic block is a palindrome (with identical work for 5-6 and 2-3). 5 makes 2 bobs to put it at the back of the coursing order. You then ring a course with 6-5 coursing at the back, followed by bobs at M,H,W at which they run in & out 3 times and jump to the front of the coursing order. After a course with 6-5 coursing at the front, the 6th makes 2 bobs to put the bells back in the plain course. The final bob H is a shunt to rotate 2-3-4. They course in the same order throughout each part (but get split whenever 5 or 6 is between them) Ring this 3 times for a basic quarter peal of 1,344. For a peal, substitute a single for one of the bobs at M,W,H where 5-6 run in & out __ this will reverse them. This substitution can be made in every part, or preferably every quarter peal (say parts 1,4,7 & 10). Finally, you need to substitute a single for bob to reverse one pair of the trio 3-2-4 on two occasions half a peal apart (say parts 1 & 7). This could be at the first W of the part, or at either of the last M,H. Since the basic part is a round block with a shunt at the end, you can reduce the peal to 5,152 by just calling the last bob home in lieu of any part without singles. If you reverse 2-3 in parts 1 & 7, and 5-6 in parts 1,4,7 & 10 as suggested above, the last part can be reduced in this way. I can offer you the following for consideration. Treble Bob Royal: there are many one part compositions available with 34 and/or 56 coursing between M and W in most courses, but the following are 2 parts with 65 courses at half way: No 3 (rung 26/2/1981): 2H; 2W, H; 2W, 2H; 2M, W; M, W, 2H; 2M. In each part, 34 course between M and W in courses 1-4 and ring the home 34 position in course 5; 56 course M to W in courses 2-4 and ring home 56 position in courses 1 and 5. No 4 (rung 3/2/1981): H; W, 2H; 2W, H; 2M, 2W, 2H; 2W; M, W, H. In each part, 34 course between M and W in courses 1-4 and ring the home 34 position in course 5; 56 course M to W in courses 2-4, ring home 56 position in course 1 and 78 position in course 5. Treble Bob Maximus: as with Royal, there are many one part compositions available with 34 and/or 56 coursing between M and W in most courses, but the following simple 2 part with 65 course ends at half way might be of interest: H; W; M, W; M, H; M, W, H. In each part, 34 course between M and W in courses 1-3 and ring the home 34 position in course 4; 56 course M to W in courses 2-3, ring home 56 position in course 1 and 90 position in course 5. Totally unrelated to handbell compositions, but which might be of interest, is a quarter peal (1282 changes) of Surprise Royal I worked out many years ago, which goes to Cambridge, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire etc, and which I have not seen anywhere else, although I accept it may be well known to the cognoscenti: (by the numbered lead-end calling positions) S3, S6, S9; B9; S3, S6. It produces two 907856 course ends (098765 at the preceding handstroke) which makes a nice change, and it comes round 322 changes after the last call. Itās sometimes interesting to see a few heads being metaphorically scratched when nothing much seems to be happening towards the end. Look forward to seeing you again at Keele in the summer, if you are going. Best wishes, David Atkinson. ____________________ talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 11:52:16 +0000 To: Roger Bailey From: Andrew Craddock Subject: Handbell Composition Collection Roger, We rang this last night. Looking for something different to call for Cambridge Major last week, I discovered the following rotation of Noel Diserens' 5120, which contains 90 leads coursing for 3-4 and 92 leads for 5-6. 5120 Cambridge Surprise Major 23456 B H ____________ 64235 4 - 52643 4 - 24365 2 - 53246 4 - 34625 2 - 52634 3 s 23546 - ____________ Repeat. Here's one of mine for Little Bob Royal. The half-lead big singles on 7-8 occur whenever 3-4 and 5-6 are both in course, and it's much easier to call than it looks if you just watch the 2nd. 5024 Little Bob Royal 23456 B W ø M H ______________________ 43526 2 - 56432 - SS - s 26354 s SS 2 65324 2 SS 36452 - SS - 54632 s s 24536 SS 2 32546 - 23465 X s ______________________ 4 part, omit s halfway and end.
